Frequently asked questions

What is a rogue dialler?

You will have heard a lot about these in the press. They occur when you go onto a website, a program is downloaded, it disconnects you from the internet and then reconnects you at a rate of £1.50 per minute. There may be no warning - and although not all these warnings are rogue dailers you must be conscious that if you see a box like this, it maybe a 'nasty'.

Why is my internet playing up? I seem to get pop up windows, porn, and other weird stuff occurring.
This is most likely that your computer has spyware installed. Although this may be nobody's fault, it does mean that your computer is seriously corrupted and will need expert advice to deal with it.

Do I need this Anti-Virus software?
Yes. Whenever you connect to the Internet, you expose your PC to some risk of infection from viruses. Typically these arrive as email attachments or from websites to which fraudulent emails 'link'.

What is a firewall? It's a program that blocks unwanted traffic between your PC and the Internet - Click here to find out more.

I got an email from my bank about technical work they are doing?
Warning! It is 99% likely to be a phishing attack. This is designed to trick the receiver into going onto a ′fake′ website which resembles the bank's site, and to enter your personal details. If in any doubt − contact your bank.

Hints and tips

• If an email includes an attachment and you don′t know who sent it, don′t open it!

• Make sure your Windows software is up to date. If you run Windows 95, 98,NT,ME then consider an upgrade to Windows 2000/XP. If you already are using 2000/XP, make sure that you have the latest security patches installed.

• If a security box appears whilst surfing, or you get any warnings − read them. The main reason for rogue diallers being so successful is people don′t read the warnings!

• Porn puts your IT infrastructure at risk, not just your reputation!! Most adult websites do not have much regard for their users, and to make money are likely to put the reader at risk.
